NSPW 2014: Location and Activities

Location

NSPW 2014 will be taking place in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Victoria is located 120 km (75 miles) north-west of Seattle, WA, and 112 km (70 miles) south-west of Vancouver, BC on the southern most tip of Vancouver Island. Victoria is easily accessed by air (including a number of direct flights) and ferry services from Vancouver and Seattle.

NSPW 2014 will be held at (located on Victoria’s inner harbor):

Inn at Laurel Point:
680 Montreal Street
Victoria, BC, V8V 1Z8, Canada
+1 250 386 8721
reservations@laurelpoint.com

Hotel and meals are included with your registration, from the reception on Monday, September 15th through lunch on Thursday, September 18th.

Thursday night post-workshop stays: You will need to make separate hotel arrangements for Thursday night and beyond.

The Inn at Laurel Point currently has some limited availability on Thursday night, although not at the conference rate. Many other hotels exist in the downtown Victoria areas (see here and here).

Also for those who may be taking flight out early Friday morning Sidney, BC is a small town adjacent to the Victoria airport (YYJ) with its own hotels. The travel time between Victoria and YYJ is 30-40 minutes.

Getting Here

There are many ways of getting to Victoria, particularly by air or by sea.

  • You can fly directly to Victoria Airport (YYJ) and take a taxi or shuttle to the hotel. Note that the airport is located approximately 28 km (17 miles) away from downtown Victoria.
  • You can take a seaplane from either downtown Vancouver (Harbour Air) or Seattle (Kenmore Air). Both are approximately 30-40 min flights which land in Victoria’s inner harbor (where the NSPW hotel is located).
  • You can take the Clipper harbor-to-harbor ferry from Seattle.

More information on getting to Victoria is available here.

Note: Victoria and Vancouver are separated by the Georgia Straight, a substantial 240 km by >20km part of the Pacific Ocean. Don't confuse Vancouver Island (on which Victoria resides) with Vancouver, BC as Vancouver, BC is 112km from Victoria!

Please arrive at the hotel by 6 PM on Monday, September 15th and leave after noon on Thursday, September 18th. Remember that invitations are contingent on you being able to attend the entire workshop.

    Activities

On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 17th we will be going whale watching with Orca Spirit Adventures (who are located just beside the Inn at Laurel Point).

More information coming soon on whale watching at NSPW 2014!
